GC anniversary commemoration at Siege Bell Monument, Valletta

The annual George Cross award to the nation of Malta during World War 2 will once again be held this year by the George Cross Island Association (GCIA) at the Siege Bell Monument in Valletta, next Wednesday 15th April, 2015 at 11:00hrs (guests to be seated at 10:30hrs.)

349eed5f0d4bf4f285a92cd1c5884fd4-418794068-1301779443-4d9793f3-620x348

The poignant and solemn event sees an ecumenical and wreath-laying ceremony being held, to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta and in honour of those who fell in its defence during World War II.

With sunny weather forecast for this whole week, the Siege Bell Monument in Valletta overlooks splendid views of a shimmering sea just at the mouth of Grand Harbour. Trumpeters from the Band of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) will sound the Last Post, followed by a one-minute silence, a bagpipe lament and the Reveille.

The President of the Republic of Malta, Mrs. Marie-Louise Coleiro-Preca is expecting to lead the laying of the wreaths, followed by the GCIA president, the UK High Commissioner and Commander AFM, among representatives of other associations, to the soft music of a piper.

The Siege Bell will ring out and reverberate at noon.

MICHAEL BAY TO FILM THE BENGHAZI CONSULATE MASSACRE IN MALTA

Clipboard02

Political drama 13 Hours, the Benghazi movie that Michael Bay is directing for Paramount, is being shot in Malta and Morocco this month, according to The Hollywood Reporter (read full article at URL http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/michael-bays-13-hours-finds-778913 )

The political drama is an adaptation of Mitchell Zuckoff’s book about the 2012 attack on an American compound in Libya that left U.S. ambassador J. Christopher Stevens dead. The story centres on the special forces team that attempted to rescue Stevens.

David Denman, John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, Max Martini and Pablo Schreiber are already part of the team.

Denman will play an elite sniper named Boon.

Denman may be best known for playing the boyfriend of Jenna Fischer’s character, Pam, on NBC’s The Office, with whom he competed for affection with Krasinski’s character, Jim. He also recurred on last season’s NBC series Parenthood.

The actor recently wrapped shooting Joel Edgerton’s untitled thriller with Edgerton, Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall, and shot a guest-starring role on the second season of HBO’s True Detective.

See some local Maltese newsreel of the set (doubling as the Benghazi consulate to the minutest detail at no expense spared by Paramount Pictures), located at the former Flower Power nursery: http://www.tvm.com.mt/news/jinbeda-x-xoghol-fuq-is-sett-tal-film-celebri-13-hours-fta-qali/

ABOUT PERMITS TO PHOTOGRAPH IN MALTESE PUBLIC GARDENS

Some reports received that some Malta Institute of Professional Photography (MIPP) members were asked for a permit to shoot in public gardens, such as the Milorda (Floriana) one.

The MIPP has checked and unless one is using heavy equipment blocking access to other users of the garden, a photographer DOES NOT need a permit to photograph in such public gardens.

This excludes the Chinese Garden in Santa Lucia, for which that locality’s Local Council has (for quite some time!! 😦 ) been asking for a fee for photographers to shoot in that garden.

UPDATE (16th May, 2015)

Due to recent issues being raised by MIPP members when they have gone to the Chinese Garden in Santa Lucia, the MIPP President Mr. Kevin Casha has requested the exact charges and regulations being imposed by the Local Council of Santa Lucia.

Below is relative extract from the Local Council concerning the official bylaws granted to the Local Council by the Central Government in 2010. That way any photographers are forewarned of what payments and situations to expect.

Mr. Casha has also sent an email enquiring if there is a contact person or an official form for applying but, to date, no reply has been forthcoming from the Sta. Lucia Local Council.

That is the idea of Local Councils which are supposed to be for the service of the citizen.

GEORGE CROSS AWARD COMMEMORATION

‘To honour the brave people I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history’.

George Cross Commemoration 2014

This proclamation was issued by King George VI, on 15 April, 1942, to honour the people of Malta. The honour bestowed was a sign of appreciation by the British Monarchy for the bravery and tenacity that was shown by the Maltese people during the darkest moments of the Second World War.

The actual George Cross medal was brought over to Malta by Lord Viscount Gort, VC., who had just been appointed and sent to Malta as Governor and Commander-In-Chief. However, the actual ceremony of the presentation was held much later, on September 13 of the same year. The ceremony was held in St George’s Square, Valletta. Chief Justice Sir George Borg received the medal on behalf of the Maltese nation.

The Malta Tourism Authority will once again be commemorating this event on April 14th 2015 inside the very same square where the original ceremony was held 73 years ago.The programme will start at 19.30 hrs with a marching display in the square by the Armed Forces of Malta Band, who will be escorting the George Cross medal inside the President’s Palace. A display by The Malta Police Band and the Malta Police Silent Drill Squad will follow.

A son et lumiere will follow, which will depict the events that led to the awarding of the GC medal.

The public is welcome to attend. Admission is free, however seating will be available only if pre-booked.
